Over Christmas a collegue gave me a roll of black and white film to shoot with. Now, it’s been a good few years since I’ve used film and it was certainly a challange to remember how to load it into the camera! It also meant I had to change my technique to shooting too, a number of times I caught myself going to look at the back of the camera expecting to see the image I’d taken, and instead seeing – the back of the camera! It did slow me down though and made me consider the shot before hitting the shutter button, with only 24 shots to play with you need to think about each photograph.
My main aim for trying out black and white film is that I’m going to start including wedding photographs shot on film and then scanned. The problem I’ve found with some churches, is that they are just so dark! Digitial cameras do struggle with very low light, whereas with film, there are a range of films designed for use in low light. In terms of the shots I’ll be using it for, I’ll still be using my digitial cameras in the main, but some shots I’ll also take with film, such as the view from the back of the church. We’ll have to wait and see what my customers think of it before I start using it regulary for album images, but I’ll certainly be doing more personnal work in the medium.
