Doug Gordon and Mark Cleghorn Seminars

Just got back from a fantastic couple of seminars at the Society of Wedding and Portrait Photographers Convention in London – what an amazing day! First up was American photographer Doug Gordon. I’ve been a fan of Doug’s work for awhile – mainly because of who he trained with – Monte Zucker. Monte was pretty much the authority on posing a bride and groom to look fantastic, and Doug had the honour of training with him in the mid 90s. Doug’s style is fast paced – and I mean fast! I thought I got through formal shots quickly, but Doug makes me look slow! His photography is amazing, but is also a great people person too – with that New York wit and sense of humour I can see why he is in such demand for weddings in the US. I picked up lots of tips and ideas to try out in the next couple of months – though I’ll be trying them out in the studio with some models first!

Second up was Mark Cleghorn, a photographer from South Wales – who originally started as part of the team that put Venture together. It was certainly a thought provoking seminar as Mark doesn’t like to spend lots of money on equipment, so he was shooting using LED torches and alsorts – which produced some fantastic photographs! Mark was/is a commercial photographer – so it was interesting to hear his thoughts on shooting portraits and different promotion ideas.

A great day overall, but certainly a long one – thanks have to go to Virgin Trains for their inability to run a coherent train service on time – but at least the train was warm ;)
