After growing up in Birmingham in the 70s and 80s, the Rotunda for me has always been an iconic building. As a child my mother used to take to the small fair ground that used to be in the sunken island bit at the bottom of it and it’s a recognisable part of Birmingham that most people know.
I had the pleasure of doing a lifestyle photoshoot in the refurbished part of the building not to long ago, and took the opportunity to do a series of still photographs taken between 2am and 8.30am one Saturday morning in September.
The photograph below below looks out from the Rotunda, over Selfridges and St Martin’s Church and the markets, towards Digbeth and beyond. It’s the time of the day when the city is about to wake – and is at it’s most peaceful before the day begins. You can just make out the delivery lorries at the markets, and the small number of cars about on the roads in the area. Hope you all enjoy it!
