Portraiture of a different kind

Being a full time photographer is actually very difficult. The worse thing (and the best thing about it) is that you are doing something you love.

The problem I find is that generally, in my free time the last thing I want to do is lug a camera about with me. Well, it’s something that I said I’d do more and use it as an opportunity to stretch myself.

Yesterday we went to Trentham Gardens – near Stoke-on-Trent. Beautiful place if you like landscaped gardens. What I was really interested in was the Monkey Forest – basically a massive enclosure encompassing a wood for 140 free ranging Barbary macaques.

What always amazes me about primates is the not-surprising similarity between us and them. I wanted to try and photograph something a little different about these animals – as they aren’t really wild (and therefore there’s not a huge amount of skill in terms of taking their photograph!) – I wanted to try and capture the emotions that we recognise.

Anyway, below you’ll find a couple of photographs that I think capture emotions that we will recognise – enjoy!
